Guardians of the Galaxy - a spoiler free review

Just when everybody thinks Marvel is running out of steam in the movie business, Marvel Studio shocks us all with a film that would not only open the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for short) but leave so many hints and references to awesome characters and Marvel lore, of course I am speaking of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Set in the far depths of the Milky Way four alien misfits are brought together by a smart mouthed, quick thinking and sometimes stupid outlaw called Peter Quill or Star Lord (Pratt). This group consists of Gamora (Saldana) former trained killer and the last of of her kind, Drax the destroyer (Bautista) a maniac bent on gaining revenge for his murdered family, Rocket (Cooper) a small raccoon-like creature that can escape any prison and Groot (Diesel) a giant sentient tree with a very short vocabulary.

This group of outcasts are thrown into a power struggle over an orb that the insane terrorist Ronan the Accuser wants obtain and use its power to destroy Xandar, the home world of the Nova Corp. and the Xandarian people in the name of vengeance. With the galaxy on the brink of destruction, the only ones who have a chance to stop Ronan is this group of outsiders. This leads to epic conclusion which consists of a giant mid air battle of spaceships and awesome fight scenes between all of the iconic characters that have been seen through out the film.

So at San Diego Comic Con 2010, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned that there was potential for the guardians to go from ink to live action. From then on Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting to see the likes of Rocket Raccoon and Groot to be brought life on the big screen. Some critics and comic book fans thought that the Guardians wouldn't be accepted by the public audience, they thought it would be a flop and would look very childish and straight up silly which would have been understandable when you look at the original guardians from the sixties.
Marvel Presents #3

Not many people know of these original guardians other than the die-hard fans of the Marvel comics (hey). Many don't know that the movie actually consists of the second incarnation of the Guardians. Back in 1969 the Guardians of the Galaxy were a completely different line up and they weren't even in the same time. In their ranks was Major Vance Astro, Starhawk, Martinex and Yondu which interesting because he's actually in the film but his character and role is completely different to comic.

These characters were over exaggerated and flamboyant to translate what a strange and weird future, so its understandable for people who aren't familiar to be hesitant but fortunately, Marvel studios decided on using the 2008 line up most likely because it was easier for the audience to relate to and that this line up smaller but filled with strong characters.

Guardians of Galaxy as a comic book adaptation is outstanding and has plenty of positive qualities but there were few things about this movie did grind on me. One of the biggest was that they most likely spent an unnecessary amount of money on the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper and instead paying well deserved voice actors that don't get the recognition they deserve, voices like Troy Baker, Johnny Yong Bosch, David Lodge and Steve Blum, granted the voice and star power that Diesel and Cooper bring only made the movie even more exciting, its just a shame to see good talent not being showcased on the big screen.

Another thing in this film is that the Collector (Del Toro) deserved more screen time, simply because he was such a huge character in the comics and also he's a strong presence in the MCU right from his first appearance Thor 2, it good to see him in the film as a whole but I felt they could done so much more with his character and his collection.

I walked into the cinema hoping Marvel wouldn't let me down, but I had a sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't be able to match up to Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. I was heavily mistaken, the movie did not waste time over explaining the origins of star lord, it was all tastefully shown through what I thought was quite an emotional opening, with your automatically invested in the main character and want to know more, and from then on its wild train ride of science fiction awesomeness. the setting are exotic and colourful, you instantly know by the backgrounds what kind of planet they're on either its the dark thundering planet of Morag or beautiful and peaceful planet of Xandar.

The environments were simply the icing on the cake because what really made this film open peoples eyes was the acting performances by everyone, there wasn't one weak character. everybody that appeared in it didn't draw you away from the main story it only emphasised it, when each character spoke or did something it had relevance and only added story and character development.

The best character development was with the core group itself, each character has been through some form of trauma and because of that you as the audience could relate to the characters (a classic Marvel trait). its this loss that makes the Guardians the such in depth characters they are, but all of this sadness is balanced out with tongue and cheek comedy which is used by all of the guardians to hide their inner pain, the interplay between the characters shows this and makes it a such a joy to watch. The best usage of comedy is the fact Star Lord's human humour is lost on Drax because he doesn't get sarcasm or metaphors. As I was watching I could see the actors own personalities coming through their characters but instead of changing them it merely added to them and made them better.

So even though I was one of those people who had the worrying suspicions blown away by Guardians of the Galaxy. I did find some negatives in it but these were greatly out shined by the positives and that is a tell tale sign of a damn good movie, and that's what Guardians was that not just coming from a comic book fan but also a movie fan and on that note i really have only have three things to say... I am Groot.
